THE BUILDERS ASSOCIATION is an NYC-based, Obie Award–winning crossmedia performance company. We use the richness of new and old tools to extend the boundaries of theater, telling original stories that examine the impact of media on various cultures and communities.
Founded in 1994 by Marianne Weems, The Builders’ work is made by a core group of collaborators that includes Moe Angelos, Dan Dobson, James Gibbs, David Pence, Lawrence Shea, Austin Switser and Jennifer Tipton, in addition to hundreds of collaborators across creative disciplines.*
We have collaborated with artists as diverse as the architects Diller + Scofidio, the South Asian collective motiroti, and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. The company’s work has been presented in New York City at BAM(five New York premieres), Lincoln Center, New York Theater Workshop, the Public Theater, the Skirball Center, Theater MITU, the Guggenheim and Whitney Museums and many other local venues. Among many international venues our work has appeared at the Barbican Centre in London, Maison des Arts Paris, the Melbourne Festival, the Romaeuropa Festival, the Festival Iberoamericano de Bogota, the Singapore Arts Festival, and many other venues. Our productions have toured globally to over 90 venues.
